KIRKBRIDE
I just finished listening to an episode of 99% Invisible about the Kirkbride plan - a type of architecture employed for mental health facilities, or Insane Asylums as they were. Worth a listen - here's the link: https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/the-kirkbride-plan/ I was particularly interested in photographer Christopher Payne's point of view - that of beauty and not horror. This photo really speaks to me about the individuals who were institutionalized. Each one represented by a toothbrush that was inevidably abandoned in haste when the building closed its doors. I, like many, am fascinated with these abandoned places, especially when they mired in such ostentatious and grand architecture. The institution in Buffalo New York is undergoing a renewal since 2006 after over 3 decades of neglect. Meanwhile, Chistopher Payne's photography captures a warmth and humanity that has been largely forgotton. https://richardson-olmsted.com/learn/histo...
